Will Facebook Application Developers become Facebook Page Developers?

Written on November 10, 2007

SocialAds is old news by now, especially as people begin to grasp that the program will take a while to gain traction.

One question, however, is at the forefront: Will Facebook Application developers become Facebook Page Developers as well?

As a Facebook Application Development company, we’ve stayed on top of “Pages.” However, we think applications are still where the business is at.

Ultimately, Pages aren’t as viral as they’d like to be- users are unlikely to engage with new brands, both because of their present brand affiliations, and because SocialAds are targeted around existing brand preferences (ie, a friend has to like a brand for it to be advertised in your feed).  Applications offer more.

Another reason developers won’t find work? Pages are easy to organize- it’s as drag and drop as a profile.

If there’s any business opportunity for developers, it’s still in applications. Of course, there may be something in it for Social Media companies that manage brands. After I made a few posts to (Red)’s Page about their incredibly high marketing expenses (relative to charitable giving), they deleted their discussion board. As brands become more social, someone will have to keep doing maintenance (to make sure that the “social” aspect is nothing more than a facade).
