Making Sure Users Understand Your App

Written on December 21, 2007

One of the key elements of a Facebook app is maintaining your brand’s presence on the site.

You’ve created an app as outreach to users- neglecting their complaints on an application review board, or failing to listen to their issues, is an abandonment of your app’s goals.

An example? Valleywag picked up on a complaint board for an app called “Who’s Online.” Basically, users are complaining that the app “violates their privacy.”

Of course, since it’s Valleywag the story is wrong. A simple check of the app’s review board would have shown that Who’s Online, like all Facebook Apps, can’t circumvent Facebook’s protections. It appears all the app does is pull in publicly available status updates. However, the users complained fiercely, and the app’s developer was unable to explain the way his app worked. The result? Bad press on Valleywag and angry users.

It’s crucial to keep outreach efforts active. That’s why you’ve made an app in the first place.  If you forget those intentions, the “Who’s Online” app won’t show any of your users for long.
