Hold Information Closely

Written on November 8, 2007

The recent Facebook blog posting about Social Ads is a great example of the way Facebook communicates with users.

No mention of “Project Beacon” or “Pandemic.” No talk about privacy. No terminology. In a user-facing blog post, Facebook only addresses the positives, and never bores users with the bigger implications.

This isn’t a criticism- it’s smart PR. When you’re developing a Facebook Application, you want to make sure to be fair and respectful to your users. But speaking in jargon is a mistake, as is making them overly conscious about privacy issues. Tell them what they need to know- from there, they can ask questions if they need to.
