Facebook Jumps on CPC
Written on September 14, 2007
So, in the past some know-it-all pundits have mentioned that Facebook utilizes a relatively rare CPM (cost per thousand) method to sell ads on its site. Now, Facebook announced that it’s testing out “Flyers” (sic) that run on a cost-per-click basis. Sounds a little like Google, doesn’t it?
Why is Facebook testing it out? Our guess is that they want to burn through remnant ad space (since the CPM Flyers are notoriously ineffective). It might lure some small buyers in, but not the big boys with large campaigns to manage. This is an incremental step, but most likely a testing one for the inevitable monetization push- a Facebook Ad Network that will run not only on profile pages, but on Applications.
