A Voice (or maybe Cheerleader) of Reason

Written on December 5, 2007

Facebook cheerleader Dave McClure may not be the most impartial source for information about Facebook. But his recent post about Facebook Beacon is refreshing.

He’s always backed up what cynics call “hype” with real facts. And the facts are simple. Most users don’t mind Facebook Beacon, or even know about it. The traffic to privacy pages proves that.

We’ve been relatively silent on Facebook Beacon here at Lonely CEO Media. That’s because our role is one of advocacy. We try to build great applications for our clients and give them a sense of the market at the same time. It’s not our job to give them a sense of Techmeme or Valleywag. That’s why you won’t find Beacon-bashing here. For most users, it isn’t a relevant issue.

That means that for your company it shouldn’t be an issue either. It’s tempting to get scared off by bad press. But hard data (and imprecise data, like polls) proves that Beacon isn’t a big deal. At least not yet.

McClure may seem like a cheerleader sometimes. But he picks his teams very carefully.
