Facebook Jumps on CPC

September 14, 2007

So, in the past some know-it-all pundits have mentioned that Facebook utilizes a relatively rare CPM (cost per thousand) method to sell ads on its site. Now, Facebook announced that it’s testing out “Flyers” (sic) that run on a cost-per-click basis. Sounds a little like Google, doesn’t it?
Why is Facebook testing it out? Our [...]

The Lines on the Social Graph

September 13, 2007

Nick O’Neill at AllFacebook makes a great point: Facebook is having some growing pains when defining the relationships of its users. When you add a friend, you say “how you met them.” Right now, the options are strongly college oriented.
It prompts a big question: how strong should the lines on the social graph be?
Facebook has [...]

Facebook Costs Productivity?

September 12, 2007

Blaming Facebook for lost productivity is like blaming umbrellas for the rain.
People worldwide spend far more time on MySpace. The biggest reason might be that Facebook is simply more efficient- it makes the clutter manageable.

Maybe They Call Football “Soccer”, too

September 11, 2007

From the developer board, one dev posts an interesting problem for Facebook UK:
“The UK networks are all named after cities, but the choice of which cities do and don’t have a network is very random. Whoever designed it never even considered that half the population don’t live in a city at all. In the north [...]

Groups Are Bigger Than Facebook

September 10, 2007

Groups definitely help (mobilize) (people).

Facebook is Still Private

September 7, 2007

Remember when the Newsfeed came out?
There were a few notable apologies.
Now, a number of tech blogs are trying to start another rebellion over privacy (while simultaneously conducting the occasional quixotic mission to make Facebook abandon core ideas).
So, Facebook will allow Google to index search results for profiles, if the user opts in.
So what.
It means nothing. [...]

How Social Should a Social Company Be?

You can bet that if you go to Detroit, GM’s top suits can drive stick.
That’s the reason that every social application maker- on Facebook or off it- should be using their application. Social media requires social creators. Facebook gets that (more than almost anyone else). Yelp understands it too. That’s why, at Lonely CEO Media, [...]

Why User Numbers Matter

Facebook recently announced it would start focusing on “engagement” when ranking applications in its application directory. The change in methodology has had negligible results- mainstream users utilize the “Recently Popular” section of the application directory to find new apps, and developers are still in the dark as to how that section works. So user [...]
